Tree Surgeon in Dawlish
Dawlish grew up in two halves. The first settlement sat almost a mile inland around the parish church, and the seafront only took off in the late 1700s, once a seaside stay had become fashionable. So one tree job here might be up an old lane near Old Town Street, where getting kit through is the real puzzle, and the next on a roomy plot looking out to sea.
It’s also among the sunniest spots in Britain, at nearly 1,800 hours a year, and our job sheets show it. Alongside the usual sycamore and ash, we’ve been asked to look after mimosa, magnolia, fig and bay in gardens around town.
This is our home patch. Both of DTG’s directors live in Dawlish and plenty of the team are local too. We also back local causes such as Dawlish Against Plastic and the Dawlish Lawn Tennis Club. We hold ARB Approved Contractor status (AC2639) with the Arboricultural Association.

Tree jobs we’ve done around Dawlish
These come straight from our own records, by area only, to keep customers’ addresses private.
- Holcombe, 2026. Two Monterey pines felled down to 2m, with the trunks left standing as wildlife habitat and the material stacked neatly on site.
- East Cliff, 2026. A sycamore cut to ground level with its stump plugged, and a fig crown lifted to give 3 metres of clearance.
- Dawlish, 2026. A magnolia taken down in sections using lowering and rigging, with everything cleared afterwards, once the conservation and TPO check was done.
- Dawlish, 2026. Two Lawson cypresses brought down by 1 to 2 metres while keeping as much of their shape as possible, with untidy hanging limbs taken off.
- Dawlish, 2026. A holm oak felled and its stump ground out, the branches chipped and the wood stacked ready to be collected separately.
- Dawlish, 2026. A mimosa reduced by up to a metre in height and spread, and in the old town, a bay brought down to 5 feet with the brash chipped.
What we can do with your tree
Make it smaller
Often a tree only needs bringing back into scale, not removing. Crown reductions take height and spread down to sensible growth points, and we’ll tell you if a lighter job would do.
Let more light and access in
Crown lifting lifts the lower limbs clear of a drive, path, lawn or roof. We agree the clearance you want in metres or feet before starting.
Take it down safely
Where there’s room, a tree can be felled in one. In a tight Dawlish garden, the climbers usually take it down piece by piece, lowering each section on ropes so nothing lands on a roof, wall or greenhouse.
Deal with what’s left
The stump can be ground out, plugged, or left at height for wildlife, as with those Holcombe pines. See stump grinding in Dawlish for how that works.
Is your tree protected?
Check this before any saw comes out. Teignbridge Council says it’s illegal to cut down, uproot, top, lop or intentionally damage a tree with a Tree Preservation Order without its written consent, and that it normally decides those applications within 8 weeks.
Trees in a conservation area are covered as well if they measure more than 75mm across at 1.5m above the ground. The council must be told first and has 6 weeks to respond, with no work during that time. Teignbridge doesn’t charge a fee for these applications.
Each of our quotes with tree work includes this check against the council’s protected tree map. If you go ahead with us and an application is needed, we’ll make it before any work starts.
What’s included, and what shapes the quote
Unless we agree otherwise, the crew takes the waste away and it goes back to the DTG depot for recycling. If you’d like the woodchip or logs left for your garden, say so when we quote.
The quote depends on the tree’s size and condition, how close it sits to buildings, cables and neighbours, how the kit gets in, and whether the road or a parking space needs managing. A couple of photos and your street name are usually enough to start. Where a tree’s health is the question, we can arrange a tree survey first.
A tree that can’t wait
If a tree or large limb has come down, or looks ready to, phone rather than fill in a form: 01626 886 763. Keep people clear of it in the meantime. Our page on emergency tree work in Dawlish explains what happens next.
Questions we get in Dawlish
Can you work on a tree on a slope or above a wall?
Usually, yes. We look at how the climb and the lowering would work when we quote, and we’ll be upfront if a site needs extra kit or more people.
Do you cut hedges as well?
We do, and it can often be booked alongside the tree work. Have a look at hedge cutting in Dawlish.
Do you only work in Dawlish?
No, we’re based here but work right across Devon, including nearby Holcombe, Dawlish Warren and Cockwood. Our wider tree services page has the full list of work.
Send us your photos and street name and we’ll get a quote back to you.
